Update: Man Shot and Killed Near Longwood University Campus

Farmville, VA- A Pittsylvania County man is behind bars on multiple charges related to a fatal shooting at Longwood University Saturday night.

52-year-old Darryl N. Elmore of Hurt is being held without bond at the Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville. He has been charged with voluntary manslaughter, reckless handling of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The 911 call concerning a shooting came in to the Longwood Police Department at approximately 7:45 p.m. Saturday. The shooting occurred in a trailer on a construction site at Lancer Park, a student residence complex located near the main campus of Longwood University. The trailer was in a fenced off construction area.

Upon arriving at the scene, Longwood Police found 46-year-old John J. Robles of Mechanicsville, deceased. The investigation by Virginia State Police with the assistance of Longwood Police, revealed that Robles had been shot and killed. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Robles' body has been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner for examination and autopsy.

Elmore was taken into custody without incident. The circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting remain under investigation at this time.


Farmville, VA-- A man was shot and killed in Lancer Park near Longwood University's campus Saturday night.

According to Longwood University Police Chief Robert Beach, it happened around 7:45 in a trailer in a fenced-off construction area in Lancer Park. The park is near a student residence complex that houses about 250 Longwood students.

Police say there is no continuing danger. No Longwood students, faculty or staff were involved in the shooting.

A person of interest in the shooting has been arrested. The Longwood Police Department and the Virginia State Police are conducting the investigation.
