Update: Driver Dies in Tanker Accident on Route 460 in Montvale

UPDATE 10:30 AM:

Bedford Co., VA - Adam Henry, 31, of Lynchburg was pronounced dead on the scene after a gasoline tanker overturned on the road Monday night on Route 460 in Bedford County.

Henry was a fuel tank driver in Lynchburg for Watts Petroleum. He was also a volunteer for the Lyn-Dan Heights Fire Department.

The Watts Petroleum truck leaked out more than 7,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel.

About 50 homes were evacuated.

Henry leaves behind a wife and kids.



Bedford Co., VA - Officials say to expect big delays on Route 460 in Bedford County after a gasoline tanker overturned on the road Monday night.

Eastbound Route 460 will remain closed for several hours until the hazardous material spill and wreckage can be cleared. Virginia Department of Transportation is currently rerouting traffic at this time.

Driver Adam Henry, 31, of Lynchburg was pronounced dead on scene. Henry had to be pulled out from the cab of the tanker by emergency crews. Officials say he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The spill forced the evacuation of about 50 homes. Roughly 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel leaked out of the tanker-trailer compartment area.



Bedford County Fire Officials say nearly 7500 gallons of fuel has leaked out of the tanker. It is a combination of gas and diesel fuel. Also, the Montvale Elementary School is no longer being used as a shelter. Clean up crews say they have to get the fuel out of the tanker before they can flip it over. Crews say it will take several hours before things are clean up.


UPDATE 12:58 AM:

Route 460 traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted into the westbound lanes. Accident responders are estimating that the clean-up will continue overnight and into the morning hours. This incident may affect the Tuesday morning commute.



Motorists traveling eastbound on U.S. 460 East near the tanker crash site are being diverted onto one of the westbound lanes.


UPDATE 10:36 PM:

Crews have started to evacuate nearly 50 homes near the crash site. A shelter has been set up at Montvale Elementary School for the people who were evacuated. The crashed tanker can hold up to 9,000 gallons of fuel. No word on how much was in the tanker. No word on any injuries in the accident. Troopers tell ABC 13 News traffic is backed up for nearly 10 miles on U.S. 460 East.


Bedford Co., VA - State Police are on the scene investigating a tanker accident on U.S. 460 East in Bedford County. The accident is near Montvale. Emergency crews on the scene say there is a HAZ-MAT crew taking care of the fuel coming out of the tanker. Eastbound 460 is blocked because of the accident.
