Lynchburg's 2nd Annual "Are You Smarter Than A 3rd Grader?"
Lynchburg, VA - The second annual, "Are you Smarter than a 3rd Grader event" was held Friday at R.S. Payne Elementary School in Lynchburg. It's a fundraiser for Smart Beginnings, a national organization that helps prepare young children for a productive, educational future. Students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades from schools all over the Lynchburg area competed in the event. They answered elementary aged questions, and squared off against local fire fighters. Organizers say this has become their flagship fundraiser... "We wanted to tie it into education and since we really focus on birth through 3rd Grade ultimately, we thought let's do something with 3rd Graders and 'Are you Smarter Than a 3rd Grader' seemed like the way to go" said Karen Wesley, the Central Virginia Smart Beginnings Director. The official winners of the event were the kids. Students from each grade had more correct answers than the adults they faced.
