Lynchburg, VA - Officials say 149 control towers at small airports, including Lynchburg's, will stay open at least through September 30.
The Transportation Department made the announcement Friday afternoon.
Those towers were slated to close on June 15.
Their statement says Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood determined there is enough extra money to keep the towers open through the end of the budget year.
Automatic spending cuts required by Congress cut the funds for those towers.
