Lynchburg, VA - The Lynchburg police department is remembering the lives lost 12 years ago.
All uniformed officers shrouded their badges in honor of the nearly 3,000 people who were killed.
Nearly 500 of the fallen were members of the military, EMS and police officers.
Lynchburg Police Officer Chris Smith grew up in New York City. He says Wednesday is about honoring the lives that were lost, not about living in the past.
"It brings up the Esprit Decor, the brotherhood that the male and female officers have in the police department, especially in Lynchburg,' said Chris Smith.
Smith retired from the Marines to join the Lynchburg police department one year ago. He still has family in New York City.
