Lynchburg, VA- A local gun rights group says Lynchburg's policy for obtaining a concealed gun permit is excessive and overly expensive.
Lynchburg city officials pay police detectives more money to verify permit applications. The applications cost $50, which is the maximum amount under state law.
Philip Van Cleave, president of Virginia Citizens Defense League, says detectives are not needed to do these background checks. Van Cleave claims these are "quick and simple" procedures.
"There are 20 grounds for denying a permit, and each must be investigated," said police chief Parks Snead.
Snead also reported it needs to be done by experienced law enforcement professionals.
