Lynchburg, VA- Your kids could be forgetting what they learned at school this summer. That's why Lynchburg City Schools teamed up with the YMCA to offer a six week summer camp to help prevent summer learning loss. The downtown YMCA received grant money and lots of support from the community and then approached Lynchburg City Schools with the idea. The Y says the school system jumped on board and picked R.S. Payne Elementary School as a target area. They selected 20 kids and this week they started their first of six weeks of summer learning. This program focuses on math and reading.
Every student is getting swimming lessons, and each afternoon they have an activity- like going to the library or Amazement Square. The students are taught by certified city school teachers and assistants. It's a partnership the YMCA says they're thrilled to have.
