L.P.D.: Search Teams Find Woman's Body While Searching for Jamisha Gilbert, No Positive I.D.
UPDATED: 5:49 p.m.
Lynchburg, VA - In a statement to the press Wednesday afternoon, Lt. Gearhart with the Lynchburg Police Department said search teams found the body of a "deceased black female" Wednesday, but could not confirm a positive I.D.
Lt. Gearhart said the body was found in a heavily wooded area between Concord Turnpike and Route 460. The area is being treated as a crime scene, Gearhart said.
The area includes Megginson Cemetery, where police were blocking access earlier Wednesday afternoon.
The body is being sent to the medical examiner in Roanoke for a positive ID.
In the meantime, investigators say they are continuing the search for Jamisha Gilbert.
"We are continuing our search in cooperation with crime scene investigators and we are focusing on a smaller geographical area," Gearhart said.
Police found Gilbert's car early Friday morning, wrecked and abandoned on the Concord Turnpike.
A missing persons report was filed on Sunday. Police have been searching in the area ever since.
Gearhart would not comment further on the body.
The Hotline for the Jamisha Gilbert case has now been closed. Instead, police ask that you call the LPD Criminal Investigations Division at 434-455-6054, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-798-5900 with any information.
