ROCK HILL, SC - Sophomore Chelsea Sciacca went 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs and four RBI to help lead the No. 3 seeded Longwood University softball team to a 10-2 victory in five innings against No. 5 Winthrop University (28-29) in the 2013 Big South Conference Championship game on Sunday afternoon.
This marks the first-ever Big South title for Longwood in its first year as a member of the league, adding a milestone to the team's already record-setting season.
"What a good feeling it is to be the first-ever Big South Champions for Longwood," said head coach Kathy Riley. "Not only do we feel great, but we feel blessed to have this opportunity to be here. The kids were awesome to work with this year, and any time you really have a chance to go to a championship, you've got to work so hard to get there. A lot of it is about the personalities, their parents and how they were raised. I think we have a great group of kids and their hard work paid off for them today."
Longwood (41-18) has earned an automatic berth into the 2013 NCAA Softball Tournament, which begins Thursday, May 16. The Lancers' seed, regional site and first-round opponent will be announced on this evening's Selection Show at 10 p.m. on ESPNU.
