Appomattox, VA - Not only are protesters flocking to Washington to protest the government shutdown, there is also a grass roots effort underway this weekend at our local monuments.

A handful of veterans have been gathering at their nearest local monument throughout the day Sunday in a show of unity and support of an end to the shutdown, one local protester told ABC 13.

In Appomattox, the owner of Kid's Corner Photography, Sarah Gonzalez, captured one lone veteran sitting near the gates outside of the closed gates at the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park holding an American Flag.

Gonzalez said the man had been sitting out all morning.

"While I was taking pictures of the sign, there were several out-of-towners wanting to explore the park, Gonzalez, said. "Words can't describe how I felt when I drove by and saw him sitting, even while the rain misted down on him."
