Lynchburg, VA - The Blue Ridge Food Bank is acquiring more fresh produce than ever before. This comes because food manufacturers have not given out as many other products.
This year, the food bank will distribute 15 % more fresh food compared to last year. That's more than 3 million pounds of produce, most of it from farmers all over the country.
Food bank workers say buying a truckload of produce is actually cheaper, too.
"I think it's wonderful we're able to provide more. People might not have as easy access to it as others, and if we can provide them potatoes and oranges, then we're happy to do that," said Kristi West, community outreach coordinator .
Workers say they'll be reaching out to more local farmers in the near future.
