Lynchburg, VA - A North Carolina high school student is getting a chance at a Liberty University scholarship for getting kicked out of school.

Cole Withrow was suspended Monday for leaving his shotgun in his truck. He says he had gone skeet shooting and forgot about it.

Since then, Cole's peers have started a campaign to bring him back with "Free Cole" written on T-shirts and vehicles.

Thursday, LUChancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. happened to be in North Carolina and saw the "Free Cole" story on the news.

Falwell says Cole's story and his clothes caught his eye.

      - "I noticed he was wearing a Liberty University T-shirt," he said.

So Falwell called Cole and offered him the scholarship.

The Superintendent says he will modify the 365 day suspension and allow Cole to graduate from their alternative school.

Liberty has offered their online GED program as an option too.
