Lynchburg - The Liberty Flames broke open a tight game against Longwood with good defense and 60 percent shooting the second half en route to a 74-47 Big South win Tuesday night in Lynchburg.
With the win, Liberty improves to 2-4 in the Big South, 6-14 overall. Longwood is still searching for its first Big South victory, the Lancers drop to 0-and-6 in the league, 3-17 overall.
John Caleb Sanders led the Flames with 20 points, followed by Casey Roberts (12) and Tavares Speaks (10). Karl Ziegler posted a career-high 12 points for Longwood, while Lancers leading scorer Tristan Carey chipped in 10 points. . Longwood's 47 points are the fewest allowed by the Flames this season. LU's defense held the Lancers to 30.9 percent shooting. Liberty outscored the Lancers in the paint 38-18 and off the bench 33-13.The Flames, up only 6 at the half, began the second half with a 9-2 run to build their lead and eventually pulled away. Longwood returns home on Saturday, playing host to Presbyterian at 2. Liberty is home again Saturday night, playing host to North Division leader Charleston Southern at 8. That game follows a women's matchup at 5 pitting the Lady Flames against Longwood.
