Late South Boston Major General Honored by Virginia National Guard

South Boston, VA - The Virginia National Guard in South Boston held a big ceremony Saturday morning to honor their late Mayor, Major General, Carroll Thackston.

Thackston passed away in February at the age of 79.

The Guard dedicated their facility to Thackston and renamed it after him.

Several state and local officials were in attendance and shared special memories with the crowd.

Thackston's family says the support from everyone since their father's passing has been overwhelming.

"Our whole family is extremely humbled and thankful for all the efforts of the National Guard leadership, town leadership and the Commonwealth of Virginia leadership. It's a very fitting tribute, we're extremely honored," said Thackston's Son, Mark.

A house joint resolution celebrating Thackston's life was also read at the ceremony.
