Lynchburg - Today's ABC 13 high school Team of the Week is the New Covenant boys soccer team in Lynchburg. The Gryphons (Griffins) are STILL undefeated in conference play, 10-and-0, after beating Westover Academy and Roanoke Valley Christian in the VACA regionals last weekend.New Covenant will play in the state semifinals Friday...just like it did last year with two seniors. This year they've got five.
Head Coach Andy Ashcroft said, "As we've been growing, I've seen a development, a better sense of the game, a better sense of not panicking when those situations happen that you go down. Recently in our past game this Saturday, we went down in the championship, we went a goal down but we never changed our formation. We never changed the way that we played. We kept on playing, quick little passes, movement, and eventually we got the three goals that took us to the championship."
Josh Aultice, Sr. Striker/Midfield, said "He's a great coach. We're lucky to have as much skill as we do for having such a small school. I think pretty much all the guys in the high school actually play soccer and that skill just comes together and he's the one that coordinates that."
John Thomasson, Sr. Defender, said "I've been here since kindergarten along with many people on our team and just playing so long together you just start getting a bond and you kind of know what everyone's going to do. You know certain people's abilities, what they can and can't do."
