South Boston, VA - Monday a Halifax County judge certified first degree murder charges against James Terry for the beating to death of 84-year-old Charlotte Rice.
We now know a witness saw Terry inside the woman's home just after the attack. From witness testimony, he was in the back bedroom where she was later found dead. The neighbor who peaked through the front door said the registered sex offender may have been naked at the time.
One of the South Boston officers who took Terry into custody also testified that the suspect had what looked like defensive wounds such as scratch marks on his face and shoulder. He said Terry asked him, "Did that lady die?"
Neighbors who were the first to find her body have told ABC 13 she appeared to have been sexually assaulted.
The Commonwealth's Attorney confirmed Monday that additional rape charges could be filed later this week, depending on the availability of forensic reports.
The case against Terry might go to a grand jury on Thursday of this week.
