New River Valley, VA - According to the Virginia Department of Health, an isolated illness has occurred among a small group of people - limited to one family and a close family friend - in the New River Valley. Two have died and four are hospitalized in fair condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. There is no confirmation yet regarding the cause of the illness, but there is absolutely no indication of person-to-person transmission, according to the VDH.At this point in the investigation there is no indication of any public health risk. This appears to be an isolated incident with a single-source exposure. The site of possible exposure is known and on private property. It has been secured pending further environmental investigation. An investigation is underway involving the Virginia Department of Health, local physicians and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The VDH said that because they are seeing some influenza activity in the community, people in the area may experience flu symptoms. Anyone concerned that they be developing influenza should follow up with their family physician.
