Is Rory the new king of golf? Not so fast.
He was absolutely dominating but this was just one weekend. Yes it was at the U.S. Open but I want to see how Rory McIlroy plays when he's neck and neck with someone and when the course conditions are more difficult. I'm not taking anything away from his accomplishment but those that are comparing him to Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, settle down. We need to see sustained success over a larger time frame, not four days.
Just look at the list of major winners since 2008:
Trevor Immelman, Y.E. Yang, Stewart Cink, Lucas Glover, Angel Cabrera, Martin Kaymar, Louis Oosthuizen, Graeme McDowell, Phil Mickelson, Charl Schwartzel and now McIlroy.
Immelman, Glover, Kaymar, Oosthuizen - all guys that got big publicity after winning but haven't really continued that success. Nicklaus and Woods are once in a generation talents and Tiger is still in his early 30s. He's not done yet at least in my opinion.
McIlroy is a breath of fresh air for golf though. He's young (22), personable, decent-looking, speaks English and has fun with a smile on the course. After winning he talked about drinking at the pub and "partying" with friends. That's what 22 year olds do even if they're one of the best golfers in the world.
In local golf, congrats to now 2-time CVIGT winner Lee Fisher. He won by 1 shot over Adam Sperry and Hunter Russell.
UVa is off to a 1-0 start at the College World Series (CWS). They beat Cal 4-1. Tyler Wilson was used in relief but he'll start Thursday or Friday. UVa is 55-10 and the goal is a title. In years past 'getting to Omaha' was the goal. Not anymore. The program has advanced enough that national championships are realistic goals. Danny Hultzen is likely heading to the majors after this. Wouldn't it be nice if he goes out as a national champ?
Another congratulations goes out to the Jefferson Forest soccer team. After years of coming up short in the state playoffs, JF won it all this year 2-1 over nemesis Blacksburg in the finals. Jedd Zaring's been there 19 years and he finally broke into the winner's circle, a place that's not easy to get to.
That's it for now. If you need me this weekend, I'll be in Baltimore watching my Reds take on the Orioles on Friday and Sunday. Vacations are nice. I've never been to Camden yards before, any suggestions, places to see, restaurants, bars to take a peek at?
Rock it out.
