Hundreds Flock to Danville Job Fair

Danville, VA - For hundreds of job seekers, this job fair at Averett's Riverview campus may be the chance they've been waiting for.

That's especially true for Marine Corps veteran Timothy Haraway. After two deployments in Afghanistan, the 22-year-old is back home looking for work.
"I got out in May and I'm looking for a job, but it's hard to find jobs right now," Haraway said.
Like so many others in this area, Haraway is hoping to connect with local employers that can offer good pay and benefits. Organizers say there were plenty of those jobs up for grabs, from companies like Goodyear, Lowe's, and dozens of others.
"One of the things that we did ask our vendors, that if they were going to participate with us, that they made sure that they did have job openings and they were able to accept job openings on site, " said Director of Partnership Development Heather Merchant.
The event is in its fifth year, and Merchant says the response this time was overwhelming, with job seekers lining up outside before the doors opened.
"This is our biggest one to date, " Merchant said, and she hopes - for people like Haraway that are ready to start their careers - this will be just the boost they need.
"We actually have the opportunity to give this as a service to our community. I think it just makes a great impact, " she said.
The event went from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. They even had a military appreciation room available to honor our local service men and women.
