Bedford Co., VA - A family has been displaced after a fire destroyed their Bedford County home Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters say they got the call around 12:30 p.m. and responded to Echo Forest Way right outside of Huddleston.

Fire crews were on the scene for almost 3.5 hours trying to control the fire.

Officials say five people lived in the home, but no one was inside the house when the fire started.

Huddleston, Saunders, Moneta, Bedford, Evington, Forest and Boonsboro Fire Departments responded to the scene.

Wayne Overstreet, the chief of the Huddleston Fire Department, says he called for extra help to prevent the fire from spreading.

"The wind blowing and the brush fire was spreading trying to burn another building down and getting away from us," he said.

In all, the fire burned five acres of the family's land.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.

The Red Cross is helping the family with housing.
