Hokies Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at LU

Lynchburg - Virginia Tech swept both games of a softball doubleheader at Liberty Tuesday afternoon, routing the Flames 11-1 in game one before coming from behind to win game two 4-2.

Liberty was trying to break its 12-game losing skid in game one, battling the Hokies on End Slavery Around the World Day at the ballpark. Flames pitcher Chandler Ball took a 1-hit shutout and 1-0 lead into the fourth inning before running into trouble. The wild pitch allows the first of two runs to score as Tech grabbed a 2-1 lead. The Hokies then broke it wide open in the fifth. Senior shortstop Bkaye (BK)Smith crushing her first collegiate homer and it's a grand slam. Tech erupts for nine runs in the frame and blows it open.
Hokies won game one 11-1 in five innings.
Bkaye Smith, who hit her first career homer, a grand slam, said "I was expecting outside all the way and then when I saw it, just exploded off of it and got it."
"When you first hit it, did you feel like it had a chance?"
"No sir. I thought it was still a part of the warning track crew as we say, only hitting it to the fence and not quite over yet."
Smith had another great thrill Monday night in Tech's game at UVa. The shortstop dives and from her knees throws out the runner at first. Smith's web gem made ESPN's top 10 plays of the night, coming in at number 4. So which is sweeter, making ESPN's top plays or hitting her first collegiate homer, a grand slam?
Smith said "Whew, I think the grand slam. Maybe but I don't know, defense is my thing so maybe the defensive play. I think the defensive play, I'll have to go with that."
