Hillcats Beat Wilmington 4-2 for 5th Straight Win
Lynchburg - Jose Martinez delivered a two-out, two-run double in the 8th to snap a 2-all tie and power Lynchburg to a 4-2 win over Wilmington Tuesday night. It's the Hillcats' fifth straight win heading into Wednesday night's game two of the series.
Wilmington had tied the game with two runs in the top of the 8th on Jack Lopez' two-run double down the third base line. The Blue Rocks nearly took the lead, but Lynchburg reliever Mauricio Cabrera struck out Zane Evans and Emerson Landoni threw out Lopez at the plate on a double-steal attempt to keep the game tied at 2.
That set the stage for Martinez' heroics in the bottom of the 8th. Lynchburg starter Daniel Watts took a four-hit shutout into the 8th before Wilmington knocked him out of the game. Watts tied his career-high with eight strikeouts but did not figure into the decision.
Alex Wilson sat down the Blue Rocks 1-2-3 in the ninth, striking out two, to close out the win.
