Lynchburg, VA - The James River is already high from all the rain we've had recently, and the organizers of the annual batteau festival are monitoring the levels every day leading up to this weekend's launch.
With the river up, crews can expect a quick trip this year. The high water allows the boats to float easily, but makes them harder to stop. More water also means there's less of a chance of scraping rocks in the river.
"We leave later. We get there earlier. We don't do any work during the day," said Ralph Smith, chairman of the James River Batteau Festival. "It's a lazy person's trip when the water's high."
The launch festival put on by Lynch's Landing will be held rain or shine. It's from 10a.m.-2p.m. Saturday at Percival's Island. The event includes music, period demonstrations, and activities for the kids.
