Henry Co. Sheriff's Office Warns of IRS Phone Scam
Henry Co., VA - The Henry County Sheriff's Office is looking for a group of people they say are pretending to be officials from the IRS and asking for personal financial information. Investigators say they have received a number of complaints from people being contacted from the scammers using a tactic called caller ID spoofing. The tactic pops the name and number of a legitimate person or business on the victim's caller ID. In one example, a caller told the sheriff's department someone claiming to be from the IRS called and told the victim they had faithfully paid their taxes and was entitled to a refund. It was then than the caller tried to get the victim's personal information for "verification purposes". The sheriff's department says if your number has been used or anyone has tried to gather personal information by "caller ID spoofing" a legitimate number, please contact the Federal Communications Commission at 1-888-CALL-FCC or file a complaint at www.fcc.gov/complaints. More information can be obtained pertaining to "spoofing" at http://www.fcc.gov/guides/caller-id-and-spoofing.
