Help Center Opens in Appomattox

Appomattox, VA - How would you like to have a neighbor you can call that will help you with just about anything? Now you can if you live in Appomattox County.
It's all thanks to a brand new project called The Good Neighbor Help and Information Center.
The Good Neighbor Center is an outreach mission of Grace Hills Baptist Church. Its purpose is not to replace any other organization. This center is Grace Hills' way of reaching beyond the congregation and into the community.
"When Jesus was asked what the most important commandment was, he said love God and love your neighbor. I think we get the loving God part but not always the love your neighbor," said Adam Tyler, pastor at Grace Hill Baptist Church.
Tyler knew it was the right thing to do. So when Church Member Janice Marston pitched the idea a year ago, Tyler was all in.
"Many people need help with the common every day questions," said Marston.
Marston had been approached by many people with questions, like who can help install laminate flooring.
"That may seem like a small question, but it's an important question for this individual who is elderly who had gone to local stores and couldn't afford it but was hoping to find an individual they could assist," said Marston.
Answering questions and solving problems is what the Good Neighbor Help and Information Center is all about. They don't claim to have all the answers. But if you bring the question, they will connect you to someone who does.
"If you have a question about where the daycares are," said Tyler.
"How do I find a ride to a doctor," said Marston.
Their mission is to help everyone whether you're a local, new to town or just passing through. Volunteers answer phone calls, emails and can meet you face to face at their Welcome Center at 2142 Church Street in Appomattox.
"That's the message we want to send to others - that we are here in time of need, in time of question, friendship and caring," said Marston.
The owners of J.E. Jamerson & Sons in Appomattox donated the space for the center at no cost. All Good Neighbor services are free.
The center is open 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. - noon on Saturday. You can reach them at 434-664-2121.
