Bedford Co., VA - Store owner Bob Terry came face-to-face with the man accused of brutally beating and robbing him.
At Monday afternoon's hearing, a Bedford County judge certified charges against Jason Shell. Shell is charged with beating and robbing Terry in front of his country store in Moneta.
Witness testimony suggests this was a premeditated and planned attack. Witnesses also testified Shell admitted to beating and robbing Terry.
During the two hour preliminary hearing, seven witnesses spoke, including Terry himself.
One witness testified that Shell visited Terry's store prior to the attack and then asked if Terry had any cameras or alarms.
Another said Shell asked if Terry would be a good person to rob.
The night of Terry's beating, several witnesses say Shell had a silver Smith and Wesson .38 caliber gun, like the gun Terry carried with him.
After news reports came out about the beating, several witnesses asked Shell if he did it.
Witnesses say Shell admitted to the beating and then threatened to kill them if they told.
After all of this, witnesses say Shell said "I rob people, that's just what I do."
This case will now move to the grand jury, but the Commonwealth's Attorney will continue to investigate if Shell used the gun to beat Terry.
"Taking the firearm clearly helped him complete the robbery. It's a legitimate question if the firearm helped him complete the assault or beating, and that just takes further investigation."
The Commonwealth's Attorney says grand jury will hear this case March 6. Two of the four charges certified against Shell could carry life sentences.
