Dhomonique's Health & Beauty Tip: Wheatgrass

By: Dhomonique Ricks

If you have a hard time like me getting your optimal intake of fruits and vegetables daily, there's a different option that's becoming all the rage. I'm talking about consuming wheatgrass.

I drink one ounce at least four different days of the week, first thing in the morning (if possible). According to Smoothie King, Just one ounce of fresh wheatgrass juice can contain the vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids found in 2.5 pounds of raw vegetables.

Wheatgrass comes in many forms, but the best way to consume all foods is as close to nature as possible. (For wheatgrass this means in the form of juice or 'shots' as they're called.) Make sure it's fresh wheatgrass, not a supplement. It's fine if it has been frozen as long as it was frozen right after it was picked. Smoothie King sells wheatgrass shots and they actually blend and grind the grass right in front of you. You can buy them at most smoothie bars. I buy mine at Smoothie King.

Wheatgrass is one of my secret obsessions. Yes, it tastes like grass, but the benefits from it outweigh any negative. And trust me when I say it's so worth it (unless you have a wheat allergy of course). According to, "Wheatgrass contains significant amounts of vitamins A, C and E; minerals such as calcium, iron and magnesium; chlorophyll; and several amino acids [needed for optimal health and disease-free living.] It has been used to treat bacterial infections, diabetes, digestive problems and skin conditions among other things."

From my research in other scientific journals, I have learned that wheatgrass contains a number of vital nutrients your body can't do without. The mineral Chlorophyll was mentioned earlier. This is needed by the body for a number of important processes. According to many health articles, Chlorophyll is a natural cleanser for the body, is a blood strengthener, and boosts energy in the avid consumer.

Also, if you're like me and have tried almost every skin care product on the market, try starting with the inside out. Wheatgrass has done wonders with my skin- clearing it up and minimizing pore size.

Still not convinced? Well, wheatgrass has also been credited for the following:

  • Acts as an anti-bacterial halting growth of unfriendly bacteria
  • Rebuilds and strengthens blood
  • Restores fertility
  • Helps to restore and build tissues
  • Helps to detoxify the body
  • Purifies liver
  • Helps with blood sugar regulation
  • Used as an antiseptic to treat: odors, Strep infections, wounds, skin grafts, sinusitis, ear infections, varicose veins, scars.
  • Helps prevent tooth decay
  • Aids in sore throat pain reduction
  • Fights eczema and psoriasis
  • Improves digestion
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Improves eyesight, particularly night vision
  • Helps with sleep
  • Boosts immune system
  • Improves nerves and mental well being

The scientific data is still coming in to back up much of these claims.

One person a bit apprehensive about trying wheatgrass was ABC-13 videographer Daniel Heffner. One day, I finally convinced him to come with me and take a fresh wheatgrass "shot." See pictures. Although he was not a fan of the taste, he did comment on how the green juice helped boost his immune system.
