Bedford Co., VA- Hawkins Mill Road in Bedford County was shut down for more than four hours Saturday evening because of a house fire.
Forest Fire Officials say a call came in around four p.m. They say the homeowners were out of town on vacation. A friend came over to feed their pets, and that's when they saw the smoke and called 911.
Crews from Bedford and Campbell Counties, Lynchburg City, and several EMS agencies responded. They say they had to rotate crews frequently due to heat.
"Encountered high heat and high smoke conditions on the first floor. We determined it was a fire in the basement and the first floor. Initiated suppression activities, knocked the bulk of the fire down," said Lt. Ryan Burnette with the Forest Fire Department,
Burnette says two pets were killed in the fire. The family was notified and made their way back to town Saturday night. Burnette says the house sustained moderate to significant damage. The cause is still under investigation.
