Halifax Co. Benefit Planned for Veteran Teacher Fighting Breast Cancer

Halifax Co., VA - Almost a year after a devastating diagnosis, an entire community is rallying behind a Halifax County teacher fighting breast cancer.Last June, Sarah Vaughan noticed something strange while taking a shower."I felt a lump and I called him in and he said, 'We need to check this out,'" Vaughan said.At just 45-years-old, Vaughan said learning that she has breast cancer was hard to accept."I said, I don't know if my son will be able to take the news, but he was strong. He cried, of course, but we've made it through, " said Vaughan. That's when the ladies at Cluster Springs Elementary sprang into action."The people that we work with are like our family, we spend more time here than we do with our personal families, " said teacher Tabitha Cash.Cash has been teaching with Vaughan for years. She wanted to find a way to get the community behind Vaughan and her family."In January, we started planning it and it's grown and grown. Everyday I open up my computer and there is another donation, " Cash said. What started as a small benefit - with carnival games, cornhole and music - turned into something much more when Vaughan's church got involved.Church member Donna Hudson said they hope to keep the family's faith strong."When life is easy faith is easy. When life throws you something like this, you have to really dig deep, " said Hudson. The money raised will go towards Vaughan's on-going treatment, which has become costly for her and her husband who has his own health problems. He's recovering from a back injury and heart attack.Cash says hopes their support will set an example for others."If it were me, I would want people to rally and help me. That's what we're supposed to do, " Cash said. The benefit will be held at the Worship Center in South Boston this Saturday from 1 to 7 PM. A BBQ dinner will be served. Tickets for that are just $10.To get more information about the event or to learn how to volunteer, contact Tabitha Cash at 434-
