Richmond, VA - Virginia could become the first state to drop its gasoline tax, if Governor McDonnell gets his plan approved.
Tuesday afternoon, the governor proposed eliminating the state gas tax, and replacing it with a sales tax.
The sales tax would be an increase of less than a penny on the dollar.
The swap is part of his five year, $3,100,000,000 transportation funding plan.
McDonnell says the 17.5 cents per gallon gas tax is no longer viable, because of inflation and more fuel-efficient vehicles.
He says replacing that tax would raise $607,000,000 over five years.
