Governor Approves SROs For Southside Schools
Pittsylvania Co., VA - Governor McDonnell has approved grants to fund school resource officers in several school systems across the Commonwealth.
Some areas of the Southside are going to receive the grant money.
Middle schools in Pittyslvania County made the list as well as elementary schools in the city of Martinsville.
Sheriff Mike Taylor applied for the grant to get a resource officer in all four of Pittsylvania County's middle schools.
The funding from the Governor will come from a $1.3 million appropriation the General Assembly approved earlier this year.
Sheriff Taylor says he is very excited about being on the list of recipients. He does not know how many schools will get an SRO from this grant at this time.
Taylor says the state will award more than $34 thousand per officer, and the department will match that, adding more than $11 thousand each.
Sheriff Taylor says the funding is a great thing because it will save the county some money.
Governor McDonnell also worked on providing additional security improvements in schools and training for school personnel.
Buena Vista, Pulaski County and Rockbridge County will also get money from the grants.
