Madison Heights, VA - You can pick up a lot more than clothing and furniture at the Goodwill Store in Madison Heights. Monday, it became one of two stores in Central Virginia helping people find jobs.
Career Connection Centers is a service now offered at Goodwill stores in Staunton and Madison Heights. The organization says they chose the locations based on the need.
Behind racks of clothing and the squeal of shopping carts, Angela Kelly found a potential lead in a very unlikely place.
"I'm actually certified as a nursing assistant and I'm looking for a job in that," Kelly said.
"A lot of the shoppers that shop at Goodwill, probably are looking for jobs potentially. And so this way, we're right there on site to assist them," said Clay Stein, Sr. Director of Workforce Services.
The Goodwill in Madison Heights' Career Connection Center offers help with resumes and cover letters, free internet, computer and printer access, and friendly encouragement from on-site coordinators.
"Be positive. Be on time. Be excited," said Monika Christian, the On-Site Coordinator
"If they're looking for a job this is a good place to come," Kelly said.
The Senior Director of Workforce Services says the Madison Heights store is one of two Goodwill stores in Central Virginia offering the new service.
All services are provided free of charge with no appointments necessary.
"Yeah, I think the idea was that there was a need for this in this particular area and probably in Staunton as well," Stein said.
"You can shop, find a job, all in one place," Christian said.
"I actually found one on Centra Health that they just put up seven hours ago at the hospital," said Kelly.
The Goodwill Career Connection Center is just being offered at the Madison Heights and Staunton stores.
The normal hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
