Danville, VA - God's Storehouse in Danville is one of the many aid organizations in our area that are helping those in need during the holidays.
At Thanksgiving though, their filled boxes with holiday staples and trimmings really make the difference for so many families.Volunteers have been quite busy all week. They gave out 360 boxes of food as they worked to making sure no one will go hungry for the holidays.
God's Storehouse Director Karen Harris and her team of volunteers have been busy filling boxes and trying to make sure everyone can enjoy Thanksgiving - no matter their income level.
"We've tried to put in those boxes some typical Thanksgiving type items, like stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, pumpkin," Harris said.
For volunteers like Mollie Duren - who has worked with the pantry for more than 6 years - the holiday rush is a joyful time.
"We had a line all day long. It's busy, but most people are really just so nice to wait on so, we're glad to have them, " Duren said.
For other volunteers, this is a time to reflect on just how much they can relate to the people they help.
"My family has definitely needed help at different times and it's just great to just be able to give back. Right now, we are very fortunate. Maybe one day we will need that help again, so what goes around comes around, " said volunteer Mark Wiley.
Deborah Saddler says she appreciates the assistance of God's Storehouse. The organization has been in operation in Danville since 1987.
"They've really helped me a lot, and other needy people. And they are a big blessing, " said Saddler.
Despite tough times brought on by a struggling economy, Saddler and so many others will be able to celebrate the holidays with great food, given with love.
"It's a happy time of the year and thanks to God's Storehouse , I'll have a happy Thanksgiving, " Saddler said.
Harris said they ended up with 36,000 pounds of food to give out.
If you or someone you know could use a little help with Christmas dinner or everyday meals, God's Storehouse may be able to help.
Food stamp recipients automatically qualify to receive food boxes. People who do not receive food stamps may still qualify by providing in proof of income and information about the size of your household to God's Storehouse.
