UPDATE: Henry County's Bassett Furniture Adding 25 New Jobs
Henry Co., VA - Governor Bob McDonnell made the last jobs announcement of his term Wednesday on the Southside.
Bassett Furniture Industries, Incorporated announced they are expanding and creating 25 new jobs.
The announcement is big news for the area, especially since the Southside region has seen the highest unemployment in Virginia for most of Governor McDonnell's time in office.
Secretary of Commerce and Trade Jim Cheng was at Wednesday's announcement.
Cheng presented a $50 thousand check for grant money from the Governor's Opportunity fund to assist Henry County with the project.
Bassett is not only creating new jobs, but they are also investing $1.5 million into expanding their manufacturing operations over the next three years.
Bassett says they were hit hard by the recession, but recently, their custom casual dining furniture business has seen a boom.
The increase in business is why the company says it needs to expand. Bassett says they are glad Governor McDonnell was able to come and be a part of it.
"We're just glad to be in line to be in any part of the announcement. They do some great work down here in our part of the world so the timing worked out that we were the last one," said Bassett CEO Rob Spilman.
The 25 jobs range in skill level and pay. Bassett has already filled some of the positions.
