French Children Learning About D-Day
Normandy, France - The focus for the French this year has been passing the story of D-Day to younger generations, to make sure heroic stories do not die with our last veterans.
The cover of the international ceremony program shows a little girl carrying a bucket on the beach. Her shadow in the sand is that of a soldier from decades past.
We saw children taking pictures of veterans and getting their autographs.
"What amazed me, the younger generation, somebody's passed these stories down to them and they appreciate it," said Henry Gurney, a Normandy veteran. "Somebody has given them an appreciation of what's been done for them."
The French also published 70 Voices of Liberty, a collection of 70 witness accounts of D-Day. Many of the interviews were conducted by students and educators.
