Franklin Co. Celebrates MLK Day with Annual Breakfast

Rocky Mount, VA - A large crowd packed the Pigg River Community Center in Rocky Mount Monday for the 12th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast.

The keynote speaker was Rev. Joan Tarpley-Robinson, the pastor of Rosebud Baptist Church in Chatham.

Tarpley-Robinson is from Pittsylvania County and a retired educator and Professor Emeritus of Danville Community College. She taught math for 31 years. Tarpley-Robinson has also taught in Prince Edward and Pittsylvania counties.

Tarpley-Robinson has written and performed a one-woman play entitled "From Slavery to Freedom." The play showcases the history of her family and details the struggles they encountered from their arrival from Africa to the present day America. She has performed the play all around the country.

The breakfast is was from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. County and town dignitaries were on hand, along with music and prayers, and presentations.
