Lubbock, TX - Joshua Hathaway, 19, of Lubbock, Texas, died after a police report says he attacked a LU emergency services officer with a hammer, and was shot and killed by the officer.
Hathaway's former high school principal in Lubbock, Texas, Linda Merriott, spoke to our ABC affiliate KAMC about Hathaway's time in her school.
"He was a great young man, he was very loved. He was the salutatorian of our senior class, May 2013. He earned a full ride, academic scholarship to Liberty University. Great kid involved in lots of service projects, National Honor Society, band member extraordinaire," Merriott said. "[It's] something we could not believe. [We] kept thinking someone had made a mistake. The news is not at all what we know about this young man."
Merriott says her memories of Hathaway were him laughing and enjoying life with friends.
There is still no word on why Hathaway allegedly turned on the officer.
