Lynchburg, VA - A former Centra employee is serving time for sexually assaulting a psychiatric patient at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Ronald Lee Cash, 51, was arrested last December after being indicted by a grand jury. Cash, from Madison Heights, pleaded guilty to a single count of forcible sodomy last month.
Court documents reveal Cash was accused of repeatedly sexually abusing a 29-old-man, who was a patient at the hospital's locked mental health facility, over the course of a week in April 2012.
The assaults were said to have happened in a hospital room and storage locker room. The record states the patient's mental state made him helpless against Cash.
The victim was examined at another Centra facility, Lynchburg General Hospital. Police collected bedding, the patient's underwear, and other clothing. They compared DNA evidence with a sample taken from Cash, and could not rule him out as the source.
Cash has not been a Centra employee since June 2012, according to a Centra spokeswoman. Centra would not say what Cash's job was at the hospital, or how long he had worked there.
Cash will serve three years behind bars. He was sentenced to 15 years, with 12 suspended. Cash must register as a sex offender. He was ordered to stay away from the victim.
