Rustburg, VA - A former Campbell County deputy, accused of raping a 20-year-old woman, is not guilty.
Wednesday afternoon, a jury acquitted Ross Candler of rape, object sexual penetration, and providing alcohol to someone under 21.
It was an emotional, two-day trial with both Candler and his accuser taking the stand. But after a dozen witnesses and two hours of deliberating, the jury determined the sex was consensual.
Ross Candler had no comment as he left the courtroom.
Prosecutors claimed on December 28, 2011, Candler touched her inappropriately and raped the 20-year-old in a dark bedroom, after playing a game of strip poker.
Candler and two other Campbell County deputies at the party that night, lost their jobs once the accusations surfaced.
One of those deputies, Eric Dillon pleaded guilty to providing alcohol to someone under 21.
