Former Campbell Co. Teacher Will Serve Four Months in Jail

Campbell Co., VA - A former Campbell County teacher who admitted to having a sexual relationship with a student will spend four months in jail.

Kathleen Cawthorne was sentenced to five years for taking indecent liberties with a minor and a total of six years for three counts of electronic solicitation of a minor.

All but four months was suspended.

The former student was not at the sentencing, but Cawthorne's husband was. He took the stand saying he's standing by his wife through all of this.

Prosecutors say the former William Campbell Combined School teacher started having an inappropriate relationship with a student in March of 2012. Over the course of a few weeks, the two had sex on at least one occasion. Cawthorne took at least 30 sexually explicit pictures of herself on her cell phone, and sent some of those pictures to the student.

"In talking with her and in talking with her family I think she accepted that she was going to have to go....and she's sort of at peace with that," said Gordon Peters, the defense attorney.

Cawthorne turned herself into jail immediately after Thursday's hearing where she's being booked. She'll have to be on the sex offender registry for at least 15 years and undergo mental health treatment.

She apologized to the victim's family.
