Former Amherst Co. Treasurer Arrested on Embezzlement, Money Laundering Charges
Amherst Co., VA - State Police say they arrested the former Amherst County treasurer Wednesday afternoon on embezzlement and money laundering charges.
Evelyn Martin, 59, is charged with two counts of embezzlement and one count of money laundering.
Martin lost her re-election bid to Garry Friend in 2011.
The board of supervisors criticized Martin, claiming she was five months behind on balancing the books.
The Charlottesville Commonwealth's attorney and state police began investigating last July, after discrepancies were noticed in the Amherst County Treasurer's Office.
Martin was released on a $2,500 bond.
