Forest Student Starts 'Bears That Care' to Help Kids in Crisis

Forest, VA - A middle schooler in Forest is providing comfort to other kids with something most of had in our toy boxes: Teddy bears!

Katie Murphy from Forest Middle School has collected dozens for her program called 'Bears that Care.' She collects and donates the bears to local law enforcement officers. Those officers use the bears to comfort kids on the scene of accidents or emergencies. Murphy started this program about two years ago by donating some of her own bears.

"Thinking about the kids that can receive some of the stuffed animals that I used to have, and how they made me feel I can only imagine how it makes the kids feel," said Murphy.

The Bedford County Sheriff's Office has used some of the bears in the field. And, Murphy hopes to extend the program to other law enforcement agencies.

Murphy is also the President of the 'Youth of Virginia Speak Out' program at Forest Middle School.

If you would like to donate stuffed animals, you can take them to front office at Forest Middle School.
