Food Bank & Kroger Team Up to Bring Food to Needy
Roanoke Co., VA - Feeding America Southwest Virginia is partnering with Kroger in an agreement that will add millions of pounds of food to tables of the needy.
The nonprofit opened a new one thousand square foot extension that will act as the Kroger Volunteer Center.
It's part of a larger commitment by Kroger to provide reclaimed product to local food banks including an estimated 2.5 million pounds of food, per year, for Feeding America Southwest Virginia alone.
"They're distressed or damaged product. They send it now for the mid-Atlantic region to our facility here in Salem. We process it utilizing volunteers and we're able to turn that food out 2.5 million pounds of food is hard to find," said Pamela Irvine with Feeding America Southwest Virginia .
The two groups also teamed up Friday to hand out the complete fixings for Thanksgiving Dinner for 200 families.
