Flames Have Plenty Riding on VMI Game
Lynchburg - The Liberty Flames play for at least a share of the Big South Conference title Saturday when they battle VMI in Lexington.
Liberty's huge win over Stony Brook Saturday forged a three-way tie atop the Big South. For the Flames to earn the Big South's automatic berth to the playoffs, they need to beat VMI and have Coastal Carolina lose at home to Charleston Southern. If both LU AND Coastal win, they would finish 5-and-1 in the league but Coastal would get the playoff berth with its head-to-head win over the Flames. One thing's for certain, Liberty must beat VMI first for any of the other stuff to matter. The 2-and-8 Keydets have lost five in a row, they'd like nothing better than to upset LU in VMI's season finale at home.
Turner Gill, LIBERTY FLAMES HEAD COACH, said "They're a very disciplined team and they're always going to play hard. We've got to play our best game, we can not be off, you can't make mistakes. If we play the way we're capable of playing, things should go well."
Bryant Lewellyn, FLAMES SENIOR DEF. LINEMAN, said "Our goal is to always get better as a defense and always get better as a team and so that's going to be our goal going into this week. Yes it was a big win, but we have to come back out, we still have another ballgame to play."
Desmond Rice, FLAMES SOPH. RUNNING BACK, said "Most people would say we're the favorites going into the game, but they always play us really well and we've just got to go up there on Saturday and take care of business."
