Lynchburg, VA - A group of people gathered Saturday to raise money for The Coach Belford Foundation, created in honor of Thomas Belford who was murdered last August.
Belford's mom organized the first annual "Family and Friends Day" at Riverside Park.
Organizers got several businesses to sponsor the event, donating food and prizes.
The foundation's motto is "help us help others," something organizers say Belford worked hard to do.
"This is something that he strived to do, was basically help the youth here in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was a coach for the Timberlake Lions football team, so I think it's better for me to carry it on," said Karen Eberhardt, Belford's Mom and organizer of the fundraiser.
Organizers say the goal is to raise $5,000 to give away in as a scholarship to a Lynchburg student. They plan on hosting several other fundraisers throughout the year to meet their goal.
