      Firefighters Teach Students Fire Safety

Lynchburg, VA - October is fire prevention month, and education is a huge priority for our firefighters.

Lynchburg crews took time Tuesday to teach some Amherst County preschoolers.

The kids got to see the fire trucks up close and the safety trailer, which shows them safety methods up close.

Instructors say Tuesday's lesson is that firefighters are kids' friends.

"And if they hear the smoke detector and they see the smoke, and mom and dad aren't around to help them, then they have a tendency of hiding, and that's what we don't want them to do," said Jennifer Mayberry , public education specialist.

Firefighters say the best thing to do is to stay as low to the ground as possible.
