Danville, VA - After two fires in Danville in just 24 hours, there is a safety reminder from the Danville Fire Department.
Captain Barry Neal says kerosene heaters are handy, but put them in a safe area, and make sure your smoke detectors work properly.
One of the most dangerous things about these heaters is refueling.
Neal says you should turn the heater off, let it cool. Then take it outside so you're ok if something spills.
"What burns on a fuel is the vapor. So if the vapor spills out and gets to the actual flame, you can start a fire and usually that's where your problem begins," Neal said.
Make sure heaters have plenty of room and are away from anything combustible like draperies.
Neal also suggests you keep those things away from your kids or pets, too.
