Salem, VA - Feeding America Southwest Virginia hosted some pretty important guests today as they thanked the leadership from Norfolk Southern for a six-figure gift.
Last year the railroad sold a Mark Rothko painting which commanded much more money than expected.
The surplus allowed Norfolk Southern to donate to a number of charities, including Feeding America, which needed $252,000 for a new roof.
CEO Wick Moorman, President Jim Squires and Executive Director of the Norfolk Southern Foundation, Katie Fletcher all made the trip to Salem.
"It was really important for us to do this because it allowed them to give back to the community without having to put capital money upstairs," said Fletcher.
In 2008 the railroad began shifting its foundation's focus from the arts to social needs as a way to make a bigger impact on the people they serve.
