Family Talks About 11-Year-Old Girl Killed in Madison Heights

Amherst Co., VA - Family members say 11-year-old Kamryn Johnson died Friday night in Amherst County after she was hit by a man driving a pick-up truck.

Deputies from the Amherst County Sheriff's Office say the accident happened on Galts Mill Road in front of Scott Zion Baptist Church in Madison Heights.

Family says Kamryn was staying at her grandmother's home, where her three cousins and aunt also live. The oldest cousin, Makayla Dodson, says she, her younger sister and Kamryn were outside playing around 7 p.m. Friday.

Makayla, who's 14 years old, says Kamryn was riding her bike and went to check her grandmother's mailbox across the street in front of the house. Makayla says she saw that Kamrym noticed a truck was coming up the road but didn't move. She was looking right at Kamryn as the driver approached and the truck hit her.

"I was waiting to see if she was going to was enough time for her to pedal across. I don't know what happened, I think she got shocked when she saw the truck," said Makayla.

The grandmother, Peggy Beverly, was inside the house and says she remembers hearing a loud "boom." The younger niece ran inside to get help, but it was too late.

"I came out here and my baby was laying up there on the ground," said Beverly.

"I ran up there, I was talking to her, but there was nothing that came back. She was gone as soon as she got hit," said Makayla.

They say Kamryn died on impact. Beverly says Kamryn's parents live right up the road, but her niece was staying with her while her mom worked.

The Amherst County Sheriff's Office has not released any information about the driver or if any charges have been filed.
