Family Reacts to Fatal North Carolina Car Wreck
Lynchburg, VA - Her family is laying 26-year-old Holly Johnson of Rustburg to rest this week. Monday, her family said they believe the driver of a tractor trailer was using his phone when he barreled into Johnson and her family.
That truck driver, Garland Newcomb, has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, and careless and reckless driving.
Johnson, her husband, and two children were coming home from Myrtle Beach when they were hit. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her sister says Johnson's two children, husband, and another family member remain hospitalized.
"Don't be texting, don't be calling, it's not that important. If it's an emergency, pull over and make the call. Because if that man wasn't messing with his cell phone my sister would still be here today" said Crystal Livesay, Johnson's sister.
Police in North Carolina say there is no proof Newcomb was using his phone. However they are investigating and looking into his phone records.
Johnson's family has set up a donation fund to help with medical expenses for her family. If you'd like to help, you're asked to contact Chris Thomas at (434) 665-5838.
